Last year after working at TheatreCraft I had the fantastic opportunity of working with Society of London Theatre in December, and from there they asked me back to be a Social Media Assistant for the Olivier Awards, an opportunity I never thought I’d have in my life!
It already feels like this year is going at a ridiculous speed but the Olivier Awards have certainly come round very quickly. So on April 3rd crowds started gathering in Covent Garden’s Piazza where the outdoor events of the Awards happen, and where the Audience Award nominees and more perform in the day for theatre fans to see for free! The Awards are also then streamed live into Covent Garden from the Royal Opera House so it’s a popular event for those who want to see the awards as they’re happening. My role on the day was collecting content from the Piazza so just basically doing what I love – taking photos!
The Piazza event is one of my highlights of the year for theatre, it’s such a fantastic idea for the public to see snippets of West End shows for free and it’s very encouraging for them to go see the show after getting a taste of it here in Covent Garden. This year Carrie Hope Fletcher and Daniel Boys were hosting the afternoon and made a great team from it!
Those performing in the Piazza were the shows competing for the Magic Radio Audience Award – The Phantom of the Opera, Matilda, Jersey Boys and Les Miserables, as well as Kerry Ellis singing a song from her next show Murder Ballad, the touring cast of American Idiot and dance groups who have performed at Sadler’s Wells Theatre.
Here are some of my favourite photos from the day!
Being part of the staff I was able to go to the afterparty, and I think it’s definitely the most overwhelming room I’ve ever been in. It felt like I’d walked into a scene from the Great Gatsby, everywhere I turned there was a celebrity or a huge name, and after circling the room a few times with just as many glasses of wine plus a bit of loitering I figured I’d head home to collapse in bed. Before doing so I took advantage of the Oliviers photobooth of course!
I had an incredible time working at the 40th Olivier Awards and it’s a day I’ll always remember.
