gigs: Kinky Kabaret

Having not to worry about catching a long train home and finally living in London, one of the things I was desperate to go back to was a night at the illustrious Kinky Kabaret in Freedom Bar, Soho. I’ve been once before and thought it was so much fun, so a trip back was certainly warranted.

For those who don’t know, the Kinky Kabaret at Freedom is a (usually) free cabaret on Monday nights starting at 11:30 after the West End shows have finished. Typically they’ll have West End performers singing along with variety acts such as drag queens, burlesque acts, magicians and so on, the more variety the better! The show is hosted by Les Miserables actor Carl Mullaney, who has impeccable hosting skills alongside a fantastic voice. When I went to Kinky this week, Tori Allen-Martin, Ben Cousins, Jess Daley and Matt Wills were performing as the main vocalists. Matt is a singer-songwriter who is also a dab hand at freestyling, and as well as performing some of his own songs he accompanied Tori and Bento sing Katy Perry’s “Roar“, very much making it their own gorgeous unique cover.

After songs, Matt would ask the audience for 3 different worlds and then freestyle them seamlessly into a song, it sounded amazing! He’s definitely one to look out for in upcoming modern music I’d say. Scottish drag queen Mary Mac performed in the evening as well, certainly wowing the audience with her singing, dancing and impersonation skills! Brenda Edwards from We Will Rock You also happened to be in the audience just to watch the show, however Carl practically forced her to come up onto the stage and sing – something not to be missed!

Kinky has such a welcoming atmosphere surrounding it and it’s always a guaranteed good night out, especially as Freedom stays open until 3 with the option of showing off with karaoke if you want to! I think it helps that I have quite an open mind about things, burlesque and drag don’t phase me so I simply enjoy all the variety and talent that gigs like Kinky have to offer, and I’m sure if you have that frame of mind too you should head down to Freedom Bar on a Monday night!
